According to the finishers at the
most recent Western States 100
Mile Endurance Race, Ultimate
Direction is the preferred pack
brand for ultra-marathoners. For
the faster runners (those finishing
in less than 24 hours), Salo on
packs were the second-most pop-
ular and Nathan was third. This
order flip-flopped among overall
finishers. Among the brands list-
ed, only Mountain Hardwear was
an official sponsor.

Urban Anglers
Larger urban areas had lower
participation rates in fishing
than smaller cities but composed
more of the angler population,
show figures from the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service. Large met-
ropolitan areas with populations
of one million or more had the
lowest participation rate at 10
percent, but they made up 38
percent of all anglers.
Night Vision
According to the Center for Disease Con-
trol and Prevention, more than 79,000
pedestrians are injured annually by cars,
with the chance of being struck and
killed increasing by 1,100% after dark.
As stated in a recent report from The
Department of Transportation, reflective
gear allows pedestrians to be detected
at a much greater distance when work-
ing, walking or biking along the flow of
traffic. In some cases, retro-reflective
materials can be 1,500 times brighter
than ordinary white clothing.
