Inside Outdoor Magazine - Fall 2018

Inside Outdoor | FALL 2018 30 “A single mill can use 200 tons of water for each ton of fabric it dyes. And rivers run red – or chartreuse or teal, depending on what color is in fashion that season – with untreated toxic dyes washing off from mills,” reports NRDC. George Yang, e.dye’s founder, is committed to reducing that impact: “One of our company’s core values is to protect nature. We have to chal- lenge ourselves to change. We should correct our behavior and find a solution.” Taking a leader- ship position in the textile industry, the e.dye Waterless Color System offers an alternative ap- proach that signifi- cantly reduces water pollution and energy consumption. By mastering a process called solution dyeing e.dye reduces water consumption by 75 percent, and what’s used is only for scouring. In e.dye’s case, just oils and some basic salts, no dye products or harmful chemicals are discharged. “In addition to water savings, e.dye’s process requires less energy, reduces C02 emissions and limits the chemicals used in traditional produc- tion processes. We can deliver a very clear water, energy and chemical sav- ings and the process that produces a better product,” says Michael Murphy, global sales and marketing manager, e.dye Waterless Color System. Adopting new technologies such as solution dyeing offered by e.dye Water- less Color Systems reflects a shift in consumer purchasing criteria. The 2017 Cone Communications study examining corporate social re- sponsibility topics found “63 percent of Americans hope businesses will take the lead in driving social and environ- mental change, even in the absence of government regulation.” More significant, the report states that “87 percent will purchase a prod- uct because a company advocated for an issue they cared about.” Converse- ly, 76 percent will refuse to purchase a company’s products or services if they learn the company supports an issue contrary to their beliefs.
