Inside Outdoor Magazine - Fall 2018

Inside Outdoor | FALL 2018 31 Ingredients Outdoor brands have made clear improvements in sustainable production methods, and major specialty retailers are changing their business practices to in- crease attention on supply chain issues. In April of this year, REI announced new product sustainability standards for more than 1,000 brands sold at the nation’s largest co-op. When the stan- dards are achieved, REI’s 16 million members’ purchases will reduce the environmental, social and animal wel- fare impacts. The 80-year-old co-op is taking a stand and requiring the appar- el, equipment and accessory brands sold in the store prioritize environmen- tal sustainability in their product design and manufacturing decisions. One of the key objectives of the OIA’s state of sustainability report is sharing best practices and technical improvements across brands. “We need to scale improvements across the entire industry. We’ve always said that sustain- ability is not a competitive advantage,” said Hodgson. “That attitude helps pro- mote the idea that this is something we should all be doing. As individual compa- nies find innovation around supply chain practices, it makes sense to share and scale those advancements.” With millions of yards of techni- cal fabrics dyed to match consumer preferences, e.dye Waterless Color Systems offers apparel brands a way to create vibrant, durable colors without the environmental impact of traditional methods. Companies such as REI, Patagonia and e.dye are proving that like the original four P’s of marketing, sustainability can be a successful core business discipline. m Climate Change Impact Estimates Over Time Across 4 Main Life Cycles Stages Source: Quantis Yoga Practitioners are Far More Active than Others Source: Ipsos Source: GlobalWebIndex 2005 2010 2016 2020 2030 2440 2840 3290 3780 4900 7% 2% 2% 2% 2% 3% 6% 4% 10% 15% 15% 62% 19% 7% 8% 11% 10% 37% 24% 30% 36% 21% 1.
