Inside Outdoor | FALL 2018 15 Compton always make sure to load up on supplies such as water, tablets to prevent giardia, snacks and first aid items. “Many times, travelers forget how much they need,” Compton added. “For that reason, I always carry water filtering options so we can refill on the trails.  One client in Boulder forgot his rain jacket and conveniently I had an extra in my pack so he could stay dry on the trails.” Lyfx can also help drive larger purchases as outdoor consumers move further down the sales funnel, and inch closer to buying expensive items such as new boots, kayaks, backpacks and personal hydration accessories. “Our goal is to encourage people to get off the couch, dust off their equip- ment and get outdoors exploring with a local expert,” McCardell explained. “Being active and in nature is healthy for the body and mind. If they don’t have equipment or their old gear needs a tune up, there are lots of retail opportunities where people can rent, fix or buy equipment. Our local experts typically refer travelers to their local gear shops and outdoor retailers to get all the necessary equipment before heading out on an adventure together. This, in turn, helps boosts sales for lo- cal retailers and supports the outdoor community as a whole.” In a way, Lyfx is like a giant T-Rex sitting in front of a museum gift shop. The service gets people excited about engaging with the outdoors, and sets them up to buy new items. “Every trip so far with Lyfx, my clients have been amazed with how fresh the air is and how bright the stars are at 10,000 feet,” Compton said. “It seems like they don’t want the experi- ence to end. Usually the kiddos on the trips are grumpy at first and then stoked by the end of the day.” At the same time, Lyfx directly supports hard working outdoor professionals. “Lyfx gives me the opportunity to make extra cash while doing the activi- ties I love,” Compton said. “Another perk about working through Lyfx is that I get to choose which days I can work, the flexibility allows me to continue other jobs and family trips.” “I was just talking to my friends around Colorado about how I can finally find time to explore more of this beauti- ful state,” Compton said.  “At the same time, the extra cash I’m earning through Lyfx is helping fill the voids in my career financially. I also really enjoy meeting new people, so it’s a win-win for me.” The company also encourages participants to clean up the areas they traverse. “During each adventure, we are encouraged by Lyfx to pick up three pieces of litter from the site where we are adventuring,” Compton said. “I think this small environmental gesture will help educate millions of travelers to respect the lands that they are for- tunate enough for us locals to share lifelong experiences with.” How to get involved One of the best parts about Lyfx is that it doesn’t take much to get involved. “Retail locations are a natural meeting place for local experts and their guests/travelers,” McCardell said. “Before heading out on adven- tures, local experts often help their guests secure required equipment. They may even need to pick up some last-minute water or sunblock. Some of our local experts also work part- time at outdoor retail locations, so they already have existing relation- ships with the retailers.” In the coming months, there also will be opportunities for retailers and outdoor companies to build their own adventures in the Lyfx platform. This will give local Lyfx experts and guests a chance to test and review products in action.
